This Day In Music 08.04.2016
Matt Healy is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist, best known as lead singer of alternative rock band The 1975.
Healy was born on April 8, 1989 in London. He is the son of actress Denise Welch and actor Tim Healy. Talking about his famous origins, he said that he is musically inclined because of their taste in music, “I think one of the main reasons our band is so groove orientated is because our influences are from R&B and Soul. My Mum was big into Motown like Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Kim Weston and stuff like that while my Dad was massively into The Stones, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding”. He left school at 16 and worked in call centres, cafés, and Chinese takeaways. His first job was "in a kitchen doing pots at a pub".
In 2001, Healy met his future bandmates — guitarist and keyboardist Adam Hann, drummer and backing vocalist George Daniel, and bassist and backing vocalist Ross MacDonald — at Wilmslow High School in Wilmslow Cheshire.
The 1975, this the name of the band, relesed their debut self-title album on september 2013. Six days later the album reached #1 on the UK Chart. The album had several singles including Sex, Girls and Heart Out.
The 1975 formed more than 10 years ago, which is why their first studio album is written from the experiences of a teenage boy dealing with love, fear, drugs, intoxication, and sex. For example Healy wrote Chocolate as a metaphor to his usage of marijuana. Healy has said that the music for the second album is written through a completely different perspective. “This [new] record is about the excitement and the apprehension and the cacophony of this world and this industry and all of the things that come with being a new band.”
Their second album I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, was released on February 2016 through Dirty Hit Records.
Some curiosities about Matt Healy that makes him a very pop icon.
Healy is famously known for occasionally opting for women’s clothing. Now he’s amping up his rebellious attitude by wearing make-up too. For the promotion of the band’s upcoming album, Healy has used make-up for scenes of new music videos and the album’s promotions photos. Healy isn't afraid to make out with fans. During his “Robbers” performance at The Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Healy invited a fan on stage. Not only was the lucky fan serenaded on stage by Healy, he even planted a kiss on her. Matt recently, talking about his music in an interwiew and said that every song by The 1975 can transport you into an 80's film.
The 1975 earn its first #1 on the Billboard 200 chart with I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, but the band also claims a fun piece of chart history. With 71 characters (including spaces), it’s the longest-ever album title at No. 1.
