This Day In Music 11.06.2016
Happy birthday to the unbearded ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard, turning 69 today!
Frank Lee Beard was born in Frankston, Texas US, on June 11 1949. Having been impressed, as he was a young boy, from the reaction that The Beatles had gotten from the girls in the audience, Frank took up the drums just to impress the ladies.
He was formerly with the Cellar Dwellers, The Hustlers, the Warlocks and the American Blues (together with Dusty Hill) bands before starting to perform and record with Bill Gibbons and Dusty Hill as ZZ Top.
He joined ZZ Top in 1969. Two months later a new bass player was needed for the band. It was at that time that Frank called his long time friend Dusty Hill to audition. The rest is just musical history.
When started with the ZZ Top he was known by the nickname 'Rube' and was creditated as 'Rube Beard' on the first album and on 'Tres Hombres', the band's third album, but is listen under his real name on 'Rio Grande Mud', their second album.
Ironically Beard is the only member of ZZ Top who does not have a beard, usually earing only a moustache.
Frank resides in Richmond, Texas, where he owns and runs the Top 40 Ranch. He's a scratch golfer and fast cars lover, Ferrari in particular.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of ZZ Top.
When asked about the future of ZZ Top Frank's response was “make a record, tour, make a little break. Then make a record, tour...make a little break”.
