This Day In Music 15.05.2016
Brian Eno, in full Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno was born May 15 1948 in Woodbridge, Suffol, England.
While an art student in the late 1960s, Eno began experimenting with electronic music, and in 1971 he joined the fledgling band Roxy Music as keyboardist and technical adviser. A rivalry with singer Bryan Ferry led Eno to leave the group in 1973 whereupon he launched a solo career as a performer and, more importantly, a producer.
"The first time I ever heard [The Velvet Underground] was on a John Peel radio show...it was when their first album came out and I thought, 'this I like, this I want to know about!' I was having a huge crisis at the time. Am I going to be a painter or am I somehow going to get into music. And I couldn't play anything so music was the less obvious choice. Then, when I heard The Velvet Underground I thought, 'you can do both actually.' It was a big moment for me.
In the mid-1970s Eno began developing his theory of ambient music, creating subtle instrumentals to affect mood through sound. Albums such as Discrete Music (1975), Music for Films (1978), and Music for Airports (1979) exemplified this approach.
His experiments with synthesizers made Eno a pioneer in electronic "ambient" music, but Eno has also collaborated with big-time rock artists such as Robert Fripp, David Bowie, The Talking Heads (especially David Byrne), Devo, U2 and Coldplay.
Throughout the 1990s, Eno joined a number of visual artists to provide sound tracks to installation pieces.
In 1994, Microsoft approached Eno to compose music for the Windows 95 project. The result was the six-second start-up music-sound of the Windows 95 operating system, "The Microsoft Sound".
An avant-garde-pop artist in video, computers and music, he has also had commercial success as a producer and his music is often heard in movies and television commercials.
His albums include Here Come the Warm Jets (1973), Thursday Afternoon (1985),Nerve Net (1992) and Small Craft on a Milk Sea (2010). Eno's most recent work is The Ship, a new ambient insallment album, released April 29, 2016.
