This Day In Music 23.05.2016.
Philip James Selway is an English musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the drummer of English rock group Radiohead.
Philp was born on May 23 1967, in Oxfordshire, England. Selway met his bandmates Thom York (guitarist and singer), Jonny Greenwood (bassist), Ed O' Brien (guitarist), while attending Abingdon School. In 1985, they formed On a Friday, the name referring to the band's usual rehearsal day in the school's music room.
In addition to drums, Philip provides backing vocals, along with occasional guitar and lead vocals, for 7 Worlds Collide. Selway is well known for his precision and proficiency in various styles and unusual time signatures, being named the 26th greatest drummer of all time by Gigwise in 2008.
His timing and varied drumming helps to give the band its sound.
Selway has been associated with emotional support group Samaritans as a listening volunteer since 1991. He appeared in the movie Harry Potter And The Globet Of Fire as a member of the band The Weird Sisters along with Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwod and “Pulp” frontman Jarvis Cocker.
Selway released two solo album Familial in 2010 and Weatherhouse on October 2014. Sailway about his last work said: “I love records that you can almost live in, where the songs become talismans that you take to heart. That’s what I was trying to create in Weatherhouse.” Coming Up for Air official video, included in this album, directed by Spanish film collective NYSU, shows a series of unspecified scenarios unfolding with mysterious detail, like a more obscure Magnolia.
